How to Pick the Perfect Wedding Shoes

Shoes are a passion for many women, so when it comes to picking the perfect pair for your wedding day, it’s a very important job.

You may be thinking that it’s a waste to hide stunning shoes underneath your gown but just because they can’t be easily seen, that doesn’t mean they don’t need to be amazing.

Your wedding shoes are going to carry you down the aisle, through the reception and see you into dancing the night away, so they need to be both beautiful and comfortable. We’re going to be sharing with you our top tips for picking the ultimate wedding shoes.

Colour

When it comes to choosing the perfect shoes, the colour is one of the most important elements of the pair you pick.

Many traditional pairs of wedding shoes are white, ivory or silver in keeping with the colours of classic wedding dresses but that doesn’t mean you have to stick with these signature styles.

Whether you’re wearing a floor length or shorter dress, you can have fun with the colour you choose to match your style and personality. Pops of pinks, reds and blues coming from your footwear can be a fun touch to your look and is a perfect way to make a statement without being too bold.

If you want to sit somewhere in between traditional and unique, a nude or heavily embellished pair of shoes is a good middle ground but the most important thing to consider when picking the colour of your wedding shoes is that they either totally coordinate with the dress or are an obvious contrast, anything in between can look a little odd.

Heel Height

Some women hate heels and opt for flats, others want wedding shoes as high as they can possibly get, whatever heel height you choose though, you need to be comfortable and used to wearing shoes like that.

Your wedding day is not the time to try something new when it comes to footwear, so if you usually opt for a mid-height heel, stick to that style or lower to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the day and if you never usually wear heels at all, you may want to choose flats or practise wearing small heels well before the big day.

There are stunning wedding shoes available with all different heel heights, so whatever you feel comfortable in, you’ll be able to find a breath-taking pair to suit.

Style and Details

It may seem extreme to be taking the style and details of your wedding shoes into serious consideration when they’re going to be hidden underneath your dress but every woman wants to feel like a ‘million dollars’ when she heads down the aisle, so you want every element of your look to be perfect.

The style of wedding shoe you go for will usually depend on two things: your personal taste and the style of your wedding dress. If you’re picking a traditional fairy tale style gown then you’ll want relatively classic shoes to match but if you’re opting for a dress that is more modern and perhaps a little sexy, you might want a shoe that fits that style better.

The details on your shoes such as lace, beads and embellishments are likely to be a real feature and a nice thing to look out for is if the details on the shoes match the accents on your dress. If your dress has silver diamantes, it’ll work perfectly to have the same on your shoes and this principle can apply for all different design features.

Having a pair of shoes for your wedding that perfectly tie in with your dress will take you from feeling good to great.

Your Venue

As females, we’ve probably all sported a pair of shoes at some point in our lives that were just not suitable for the venue or occasion and although this can make for some funny memories, your wedding day is not the time to try this.

You need your footwear for the day to be the perfect balance of beautiful and practical to ensure you’re comfortable for the duration of your day, which means you have to take your venue into consideration when choosing your shoes.

If you’re getting married in the countryside, a stiletto heel might not be the best choice and similarly, if you’re getting married abroad, a heavy shoe isn’t going to be the best for you. Keep every element of your day in mind when choosing your shoes and you should be able to sport them from the minute you head down the aisle to the moment the day ends.

Break the Shoes In

Something to consider once you’ve chosen the dream pair but an important tip nevertheless, you may want to spend some time breaking your shoes in before the big day to ensure optimum comfort when it comes to the actual wedding.

We wouldn’t recommend wearing them for a night out prior to the main event but tottering around the house in them will soften the soles and heels and also get you used to the fit, so they don’t feel so tight and solid when it comes to putting them on for your special day.

Things to Remember

The run-up to your wedding day is a busy time and it can be easy to forget little things, so here’s a quick checklist of things to remember when it comes to your feet before the day:

  • Pedicure – you’ve found the dream shoes, now treat your feet before you wear them to ensure you feel pampered from head to toe.
  • Blister Plasters – the slightly more unglamorous side of being a bride, as much as you wear them in, some shoes will always rub and you don’t want your night to be ruined by blisters, so make sure either your maid of honour, mum, dad or someone else close to you has blister plasters with them in case you need them.
  • A Spare Pair of Flats – as much as you may feel determined to be the bride who wears her heels all night long, there’s no shame in throwing in the towel when it comes to hitting the dance floor, so have a spare pair of flats somewhere you can grab them for when you want to get the party started.
